Free and Open Source Alternatives to Adobe Dreamweaver

Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web

Alternatives to Adobe Dreamweaver

Visual Studio is perhaps the editor most similar to Adobe Dreamweaver because it has a “Design View” feature built in. It has a robust code view too featuring code hinting and colour coding.

Another advantage is that Visual Studio from version 2010 onwards supports the jQuery VSDoc plugin which will enable code hinting when working with jQuery and JavaScript files.

Microsoft Visual Studio Express edition is given out for free provided you register with Microsoft which is a very quick process.

Aptana Studio 3

Aptana Studio - alternative to Adobe Dreamweaver

Aptana Studio 3 is an open source web development package. With built in W3C validation, the ability to set projects, a plugin eco-system just to name a few of its plus points, Aptana is a viable alternative to Adobe Dreamweaver.

By default the colour scheme of the code view in Aptana is dark. However built-into the software is a host of different colour schemes, even one to match Dreamweaver to make the switchover as painless as possible.

Sublime Text 2

Sublime Text - Alternative to Adobe Dreamweaver

Sublime Text 2 is a very light-weight code editor package. What sets it apartfrom the competition is its massive plugin community and support. Out of the box it is very bare bones, which some people prefer. However, with a few plugins I have managed to surpass the functionality of Dreamweaver with code hinting, automatic tag closing hex colour highlighting and more.

Stay tuned for our up-coming guide on how to install plugins for Sublime Text 2.
